2000 TO 2050 NATIONAL WATER RESOURCE STUDY

The National Water Resource Study for Peninsular Malaysia which was completed in 2000 to ensure water resources and demand up to 2050 are sufficient and meet specified  targets was carried out by  SMHB Sdn. Bhd. in cooperation with Ranhill Bersekutu Sdn. Bhd. and Jurutera Perunding Zaaba .
This report took into consideration several important aspects pertaining to the development of the national water resource sector to ensure water supply in the country is constantly adequate in line with demand and need for water up to 2050.
In principle, the increase in demand for water in the industrial, domestic sectors, etc. is estimated to be a 63% increase of the total demand for water for the period 2000 – 2050. Nonetheless, the quality of rivers which are the main resources of water for the nation, is at a disturbing level if no positive action is taken to control the quality of the water resources.
This study found that there will be a huge impact on the national water resources as a result of the rapid growth of demand from the agricultural, industrial and domestic sectors, which in turn will increase pressure on existing water resources especially during the long drought brought about by El Nino, change in land use and global climatic changes.
This study encompassed planning, development, policy, finance and environmental management aspects which necessitates the close cooperation of the federal and state governments in realising the goals of the study.
